The Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies is a structural unit of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The Institute was created to carry out scientific research, fundamental and applied research on the problems of Ukrainian studies; scientific support of the Ukrainian studies component in the system of education and training of Ukraine, training of higher education applicants for the degree of doctor of philosophy; dissemination of scientific and popular scientific information about Ukraine and Ukrainians in the world.

The history of the Institute begins in January 1992, when the Order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Ukrainian SSR No. 19 dated January 24, 1992 established the Institute of Ukrainian Studies as an educational and scientific unit of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University.

By Resolution No. 1003 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated June 21, 2000, the Scientific Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies was established in Kyiv on the basis of the Institute of Ukrainian Studies of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University.

By Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 601/2009 dated August 7, 2009, the National Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies was granted the status of National.

By order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 4 dated January 5, 2011, it was reorganized into the National Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies and World History (NNRIUVI).

In 2014, NNDIUVI was liquidated and, in accordance with the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated July 9, 2014 No. 671-r, the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies was established on its basis, which was under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

By order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated 08.03.2024 No. 279, the National Scientific University was reorganized by joining it to Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. According to the decision of the Academic Council of Taras Shevchenko National University dated 14.03.2024, a separate division was created in the structure of the University - the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University.

The main tasks of the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies:
• development of Ukrainian studies as an integrative field of knowledge and interdisciplinary studies about Ukraine and world Ukrainians;
• development of the methodology of national humanitarian science, culture, education, upbringing based on traditional Ukrainian values;
• raising the level of national consciousness of the society, promoting the formation of the worldview of the Ukrainian people, the strategy of state formation and social development of Ukraine;
• promoting the preservation of national memory, protection of historical, archaeological monuments and cultural heritage of Ukraine;
• formation of ideology and politics, social organization and state formation in modern Ukraine, unity of interests of Ukrainians and ethnic minorities as equal subjects of civil society;
• strengthening ties with Ukrainians and Ukrainian studies centers abroad;
• national-patriotic education of Ukrainian youth.
For three decades, the leading scientists of the Scientific Research Institute of Ukraine have been working on the implementation of applied and fundamental scientific research, the purpose of which is to introduce modern knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians into the humanitarian space, the development of Ukrainian studies as the basis of the formation of the worldview of the Ukrainian people, raising the level of civic and national consciousness of society; scientific and analytical support for the development and improvement of the foundations of humanitarian policy of the state.
